Apple has launched HomeView, a seven-inch smart home dashboard, alongside updated entertainment hardware and its first home accessory range. The announcement brings household controls, personalised information and four-speaker surround sound into the same ecosystem, with HomeView supporting Matter-certified accessories and offering installation options for both tabletop and wall-mounted use.

Key facts

  • HomeView uses facial recognition to distinguish up to six enrolled household members.
  • HomeView pre-orders are available in the UK and US, but not the EU.
  • Supported accessories include Matter-certified products and devices carrying Works with Apple Home compatibility.
  • Schneider Home offers three dedicated wall mounts, covering professional installation and self-installation.
  • Four HomePod mini 2 speakers can provide surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K.
  • HomePod mini 2 will receive Siri AI through a future software update.

What happened

Apple has introduced HomeView at its US Welcome Home event, adding a dedicated seven-inch display to its smart home offering. The hub combines household device controls with personalised information, using facial recognition to identify as many as six users and present content suited to each person, including widgets and interactive artwork.

The dashboard provides access to security camera images and controls for heating, lighting, door locks and blinds. Detection of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms can also prompt notifications on other devices within the Apple ecosystem, extending the hub’s role beyond direct control of individual accessories.

The launch also includes a new generation of Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini 2 and the Apple Home Collection of accessories. HomeView works with Apple’s first camera, thermostat and lock range, as well as third-party accessories certified for Matter or carrying Works with Apple Home compatibility.

The background

The announcement follows trade speculation about Apple’s plans to expand its presence in connected homes. Earlier reports linked a delay to HomeView with continued development of the company’s next-generation Siri assistant, placing voice software alongside hardware as a factor in the product’s reported development timetable.

Apple developed its new home accessory collection in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. The range brings those manufacturers into the launch alongside Apple’s control display, streaming hardware and compact speakers.

Installation and audio

HomeView has separate audio arrangements for tabletop and wall-mounted installations. The tabletop version uses a pair of custom full-range drivers, a downward-facing woofer and two passive radiators configured to cancel opposing forces. It supports spatial audio and listening across multiple rooms through Apple Music and compatible third-party applications.

The wall-mounted model has two custom drivers, with computational audio configured for placement against a wall. Schneider Home supplies three dedicated mounting options, with provision for professional fitting as well as self-installation. The announcement therefore distinguishes both the mounting hardware and the acoustic configuration for this installation format.

For television playback, HomePod mini 2 introduces a surround arrangement using four speakers with the new Apple TV 4K. According to Apple, the system identifies where each speaker sits in the room and automatically adjusts playback timing and levels to suit the listening space.

HomePod mini 2 also works as an audio output for a Mac. Beyond playback, it adds Sound Glow lighting modes with colour matching and supports voice commands for smart home management.

Privacy and household access

Apple says HomeView separates camera and microphone processing from the wider system through protected, compartmentalised runtimes. The company presents this separation as part of the hub’s privacy and security design, rather than relying solely on restrictions within individual applications.

According to Apple, information processed inside Secure Enclaves is inaccessible to the hub’s software, applications, users and the company itself. That claim concerns the protected processing environment used by a device designed to recognise household members and respond to activity in a shared space.

Personal information from applications including Messages and Calendar has additional display conditions. HomeView must recognise the enrolled person, and that person’s paired iPhone or iPad must be nearby and have been unlocked recently. Facial recognition alone is therefore not sufficient to reveal that personal content on the household screen.

What people are saying

Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, described Siri AI on Apple TV as a conversational way to find programmes through the television interface. He said integrated far-field microphones allow hands-free use, positioning voice interaction as part of the viewing experience rather than only a means of issuing device commands.

Apple says the new Apple TV 4K improves performance over its predecessor and describes its pairing with HomePod mini speakers as the company’s most immersive home cinema surround offering so far. For HomeView’s tabletop audio system, the manufacturer also says computational processing continually adjusts loudness and bass response as playback volume changes.

What happens next

HomeView is available to pre-order in the UK and US, while EU pre-orders are not available. That regional distinction applies to the control hub; the announcement does not establish a wider EU availability timetable for it.

HomePod mini 2 is due to gain Siri AI through a later software release. HomeView and the new Apple TV 4K feature the assistant for voice-led discovery and awareness of on-screen content. Access to personal context drawn from applications depends on pairing with a device that supports Apple Intelligence.

Why this matters

For integrators, the launch combines a dedicated household interface, third-party accessory support and a new television audio configuration. Specification will need to distinguish HomeView’s tabletop and wall-mounted audio arrangements, account for the paired-device conditions governing personal information, and separate available features from the promised HomePod mini 2 Siri AI update. Clients considering HomeView also face a clear regional availability difference: UK and US pre-orders are open, but EU pre-orders are not.
